Racing For A Cure

My Message
Since 2010 I've been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and went through some very hard times. Finding the "right" medication took several years. March 2014 my rheumatologist put me on Humira (anti TNF) and a few weeks later I started to feel better. Time to put some action into my life again! I decided to give running a try. In the beginning I ran for only a few seconds a day. At that time a big accomplishment! For the first time in years it felt like I had control over my own body again. This feeling became an addiction and I started to run more and longer. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone, with my body as my coach! In October 2014 I joined Racing For A Cure. Determined to run for those who can't anymore, to inspire others, to spread awareness and to kick Ankylosing Spondylitis! In 2014 I competed in two 5K races. In 2015 my main goal was to raise awareness for Ankylosing Spondylitis. I started up a team with awesome runners who help me raise awareness around Europe. For me 2015 was an amazing year... Never thought I would be able to run a half marathon, but I did... twice! And almost every race I run, I manage to smash my PR. I feel stronger than I ever felt before. AS sometimes kicks me hard, but I kick AS back even harder. In 2016 I set up a local event to fundraise money. It was a tough year with a major setback when I was forced to stop my anti TNF due to serious complications. I developed Lupus, so the struggle became even harder. In March 2017 I got 'green light' on starting up Enbrel (also anti TNF). After injecting myself with my first shot I subscribed for my first marathon. I was hoping the drug would actually kick in so I could go back to running long distances again.... Fall seven times, get back up eight. But I was determined to continue my marathon training and on 24 September 2017... I did it. I ran a full marathon. A dream came true. I only have one big dream left now: and that is to find a cure for Ankylosing Spondylitis. I will keep on running and spreading awareness till they find a cure.
